Last week we began Digging In to the Breathe Building project in earnest when Don Burke Excavation & Construction (DBEC) began excavating for the basement. They removed approximately 600 cubic yards of fill dirt from site.
The majority of the fill dirt was delivered to two homeowners whom we located via a Craigslist ad for free fill dirt. One of the property owners used the material to fill in an old irrigation pond in a pasture. The other homeowner was particularly pleased to have the soil because it enabled him to reshape his ½ acre front yard. We originally estimated around a dozen truckloads of soil, but in the end we removed approximately 20 truckloads of soil from site, hauling it to one of three properties within 30 minutes of the site.
We’re grateful that DBEC was willing to accommodate our special request. We know the Breathe Building often requires subcontractors to deviate from business-as-usual and we’re glad there are companies like DBEC who are interested in helping with our sustainability initiatives!
